Presenting the Tula Pink HomeMade Challenge:
A juried and judged quilt challenge Sponsored by FreeSpirit and Aurifil.
Thimble Full of Stars proudly announces that we are a
#HomeMadeChallege Participating Retailer!
A quilt from one lucky Thimble Full of Stars customer will be submitted to a jury of experts, including Tula Pink, for the chance to hang as part of the HomeMade Challenge exhibit at the Fall International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston, Texas in October 2020. The challenge encourages quilters to pay tribute to what drives the maker to create with their hands, through the creation of a 60” x 60” quilt featuring 80% of the new Tula Pink HomeMade fabrics and using Aurifil threads. Tula and her panel of experts will jury submitted quilts that speak to the glory, attitude and beauty that comes from the privilege of saying “Hey, I made that.”
One FIRST PLACE winner will earn a prize package of over $10,000 including a BERNINA 570QE Special Edition by Tula Pink sewing machine, Tula Pink Fabric from FreeSpirit, an assortment of sanctioned Tula Pink Aurifil thread collections and other related sewing and quilting products. One VIEWER’S CHOICE winner, selected via social media, will win a package of sewing related items valued at over $1,200, and one HONORABLE MENTION winner will receive a prize package valued at over $1,000. All winners will receive a quilt show ribbon!
The challenge runs from March – June 30, 2020.
The Purpose of the Challenge
The humming of the sewing machine, the repetitive motion of a needle passing between the fibers of cloth, the joy of a fresh rotary blade, the gentle steam of a hot iron, the accomplishment of making something with our own hands, these are the things that bind us together. What to some may seem foreign, to us it defines our very existence, that which expresses who we are and amplifies our sense of accomplishment and self-worth. The focus of the HomeMade juried exhibit is to create an item that celebrates our community of makers and all the glory, attitude and beauty that comes from the privilege of saying “Hey, I made that.” Each quilt will pay tribute to what drives us to create with our hands. It’s about creativity, intention, approach, quality and the pure sense of joy achieved by playing with fabric, threads and finely-crafted tools.
The entries can be art quilts or traditional quilts that speak to the theme. Any techniques—piecing, appliqué, embroidery and/or manipulated fabric, etc. may be used.
How Does it Work?
Each entrant may submit up to TWO works to their local quilt shop. Approximately 80% of each work (60”x 60” quilt) must feature FreeSpirit HomeMade fabric by Tula Pink. We ask that each entrant’s finished work include some application of Aurifil Thread too. Please ask that they be specific about the thread color and weights used. Each quilt shop will then select ONE quilt to submit to FreeSpirit.
Next, a jury of experts, including Tula Pink, will select TWELVE quilts to be part of the HomeMade Challenge exhibit at the Fall International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston, Texas in October 2020, and the opportunity to win over $10,000 in prizes!
